Port Glasgow is a historic town on the southern bank of the River Clyde in Inverclyde, west of Glasgow. The town developed as an important port and trading centre and later became strongly associated with shipbuilding and marine engineering. Its waterfront and surviving industrial buildings reflect this maritime heritage, while the surrounding hills provide views across the Clyde estuary. Port Glasgow is now part of the wider Inverclyde urban area and has strong transport connections with Greenock and Glasgow. The town provides a useful base for exploring the Clyde coast, nearby islands and the historic landscapes of Renfrewshire and Argyll. Spring and summer are particularly suitable for exploring the waterfront and surrounding countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Newark Castle is Port Glasgow's principal historic attraction and is an impressive sixteenth-century fortified residence overlooking the River Clyde. The castle provides an important connection with the area's maritime and aristocratic history. The town's historic harbour and surviving shipbuilding infrastructure also illustrate the importance of the Clyde to Scotland's industrial development. Nearby Greenock contains further maritime and industrial heritage attractions, while the Clyde estuary provides opportunities for scenic walks and views towards the surrounding hills and islands.

Food and leisure

Port Glasgow has cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs and local shops, with a wider range of dining and entertainment available in nearby Greenock. Scottish seafood and traditional dishes feature in the regional food culture. Visitors can combine a meal in the town with a visit to Newark Castle or an excursion along the Clyde waterfront.
