Porthaethwy, commonly known as Menai Bridge, is a historic town on the Isle of Anglesey overlooking the Menai Strait. The town grew substantially after the construction of Thomas Telford's Menai Suspension Bridge in the early nineteenth century, which transformed connections between Anglesey and mainland Wales. Its waterfront setting and engineering heritage remain central to its identity.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

The Menai Suspension Bridge is the town's defining landmark and one of Britain's most important historic engineering structures. Designed by Thomas Telford and opened in 1826, it was built to carry the London-to-Holyhead road across the turbulent Menai Strait. The nearby Britannia Bridge provides another impressive crossing and reflects the continuing importance of the strait as a transport route.

The Menai Strait offers opportunities for coastal walking, boating, wildlife watching and photography, while nearby attractions include Plas Newydd, Beaumaris Castle and the historic landscapes of Anglesey. Bangor is situated directly across the strait and provides additional cultural and shopping facilities.

Food and shopping

Porthaethwy has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, galleries and independent shops, particularly around the town centre and waterfront. Welsh lamb, seafood, cheeses and locally produced ingredients feature strongly in the regional cuisine. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the Menai Strait and Anglesey, while the town's bridges and maritime heritage provide year-round interest.
