Prudhoe is a historic town in Northumberland, situated on the south bank of the River Tyne west of Newcastle upon Tyne. The settlement developed around Prudhoe Castle and later became closely connected with coal mining and the industrial growth of the Tyne Valley. Its location between Newcastle and the rural landscapes of western Northumberland gives it a mixture of urban and countryside influences. Today Prudhoe is primarily residential but retains an important historic identity.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Prudhoe Castle is the town's principal landmark, with medieval origins and surviving fortifications overlooking the surrounding landscape. The Tyne Valley provides scenic opportunities for walking and cycling, while the nearby Derwent Walk follows a former railway route through woodland and countryside. Newcastle and Gateshead are easily accessible for museums, galleries and urban attractions, while further west the North Pennines and Hadrian's Wall offer extensive historic and natural attractions. The Angel of the North is also within convenient driving distance.

Food and when to visit

Prudhoe has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and local shops, with a wider range of dining and shopping available in Newcastle and Gateshead. Northumbrian food and traditional pub dishes are common throughout the region. Late spring through early autumn is particularly good for walking along the Tyne and exploring the surrounding countryside. Prudhoe works well as a base for combining Newcastle with the historic and rural attractions of the Tyne Valley.
