Rainham is a district in the London Borough of Havering on the eastern edge of Greater London. The settlement has medieval origins and developed around agriculture, river trade and its position beside the Thames. Railway development and twentieth-century industrialisation encouraged further growth, while large areas of marshland and countryside around the settlement have remained comparatively open.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

St Helen and St Giles Church is one of Rainham's principal historic landmarks, standing close to the former village centre. The nearby Rainham Hall, a Georgian National Trust property, provides important architectural and social history. Rainham Marshes, managed as a nature reserve, is particularly valuable for birdwatching and wetland wildlife, with extensive walking trails and views towards the Thames. The Ingrebourne Valley also provides green corridors and walking routes through the surrounding landscape.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Rainham has supermarkets, cafés, pubs, restaurants, takeaways and local shops, with British, Indian, Turkish and other international cuisines represented. Larger retail centres are available in nearby Romford and Lakeside. Late spring through early autumn is particularly suitable for exploring Rainham Marshes and the Thames-side landscape, while Rainham Hall and the historic village can be visited throughout the year. The district is especially appealing to visitors interested in wetlands, local history and the less urban side of east London.
