Redcar is a coastal town in North Yorkshire, situated between the North Sea and the industrial landscape of the Tees Valley. The town developed as a seaside resort during the nineteenth century, while fishing and later heavy industry also played important roles in its economy. Its long beach and promenade remain central to the character of the town. Redcar is also closely connected with the steel and chemical industries of nearby Teesside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Redcar's long sandy beach and promenade are its principal attractions, offering wide views across the North Sea and towards the Cleveland coast. The Kirkleatham estate and nearby Kirkleatham Museum provide important historical and cultural attractions, while the Redcar seafront has a traditional seaside atmosphere. The town is also close to the North York Moors, with scenic routes leading towards Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Staithes and Whitby. Nature reserves and coastal walking routes around the Tees estuary provide additional opportunities for outdoor activities.

Food and when to visit

Redcar has traditional fish and chip shops, cafés, seaside restaurants, pubs and independent shops, with seafood and classic British seaside food particularly popular. Summer is the busiest period for the beach and promenade, while spring and early autumn are well suited to coastal walks and excursions. The surrounding coastline can also be attractive outside the main tourist season. Redcar is a useful base for exploring the North Yorkshire coast, the North York Moors and the wider Teesside area.
