Rochester is a historic city on the River Medway in Kent, forming part of the wider Medway urban area with Chatham, Gillingham and Strood. Its origins stretch back to Roman times, when the settlement became an important crossing point and centre on the route through Kent. The medieval cathedral and castle established Rochester as a major religious and defensive centre, while the city later became closely associated with the novelist Charles Dickens. Today its remarkably compact historic centre makes Rochester one of the most distinctive heritage destinations in the southeast of England.

The historical and tourist importance of the city

Rochester Cathedral is one of England's oldest cathedrals, while Rochester Castle has one of the country's most impressive surviving Norman keeps. The historic High Street contains timber-framed and Georgian buildings, many associated with Charles Dickens, who used Rochester and the surrounding area as inspiration for several works. Nearby attractions include Restoration House, Upnor Castle and the historic dockyard at Chatham. The River Medway and surrounding Kent countryside provide opportunities for walking, cycling and scenic excursions.

Food and when to visit

Rochester has traditional pubs, cafés, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops, with Kentish produce and British cuisine complemented by international options. The historic High Street is particularly attractive for browsing small shops and enjoying cafés in traditional surroundings. Spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the castle, cathedral and riverside, while Dickens-themed events add interest at other times of year. Rochester is conveniently connected to London and makes an excellent heritage stop when travelling through Kent.
