Rye is a historic market town in East Sussex situated close to the coast and the border with Kent. Once an important medieval port, the town is now surrounded by land that was reclaimed from the sea as the coastline changed. Its elevated historic centre preserves a remarkable collection of medieval and early modern buildings. Rye has become one of the region's best-known destinations for history, architecture and independent shopping.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Mermaid Street, with its timber-framed buildings and cobbled character, is one of Rye's most recognisable sights. Rye Castle, St Mary's Church and the historic town centre provide further reminders of the town's medieval importance. Nearby Rye Harbour Nature Reserve offers extensive opportunities for birdwatching and coastal walks, while Camber Sands provides a long sandy beach a short distance away. The surrounding High Weald and Romney Marsh offer scenic drives, walking routes and historic villages.

Food and leisure

Rye has an excellent selection of independent cafés, restaurants, pubs, bakeries and specialist food shops. Local seafood and produce from Sussex and Kent feature prominently in the regional cuisine. Late spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring the town, harbour and nearby beaches. Rye is also an attractive destination outside the main summer season because of its historic streets, galleries and independent shops.
