Salcombe is a picturesque seaside town on the Kingsbridge Estuary in South Devon. Its sheltered position, narrow streets and attractive waterfront have made it a popular sailing and holiday destination for generations. The town is surrounded by rolling countryside and some of Devon's most beautiful coastal landscapes. Salcombe also forms part of the South Devon National Landscape, giving it considerable importance for coastal tourism and outdoor recreation.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

The harbour and estuary are central to Salcombe's character, with boats, sailing activities and waterfront views forming much of the town's appeal. Salcombe North Sands and South Sands provide attractive beaches, while the South West Coast Path offers spectacular walks along the surrounding cliffs and headlands. Nearby attractions include Overbeck's garden and the historic village of Kingsbridge. Boat trips provide an enjoyable way to explore the estuary and coastline.

Food and leisure

Salcombe has a strong selection of seafood restaurants, cafés, pubs, ice-cream shops and independent businesses. Fresh Devon seafood and local produce are particularly popular, especially during the summer season. Late spring through early autumn is the best time for beaches, boating and coastal walking, although the town is quieter and atmospheric outside the peak season. Salcombe is an excellent stop when travelling along the South Devon coast.
