Salford is a city in Greater Manchester situated immediately west of central Manchester along the River Irwell. It developed rapidly during the Industrial Revolution through textiles, manufacturing, canals and trade, becoming an important part of the industrial economy of Lancashire. The decline of traditional industry left large areas in need of regeneration, particularly around the former docks. Today Salford has been transformed into a modern centre for media, education, technology, culture and residential development while retaining important industrial heritage.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

Salford Quays is the city's most significant modern attraction and has been transformed from former docks into a major waterfront district. The Lowry arts centre and theatre provides exhibitions, performances and cultural events, while the Imperial War Museum North stands nearby across the Manchester Ship Canal. MediaCityUK has become an important centre for British broadcasting and creative industries and is home to major media organisations. Salford Museum and Art Gallery and the historic Ordsall Hall provide further insight into the area's history.

Food and leisure

Salford has a growing selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs and entertainment venues, particularly around Salford Quays and MediaCityUK. The wider metropolitan area provides an enormous range of dining options, from traditional northern pubs to international cuisine. The waterfront is especially attractive for walking and cycling, while Manchester city centre is immediately accessible for major shopping, nightlife and cultural attractions. Salford can be visited throughout the year, with spring and summer particularly pleasant for exploring the quays and canals.
