Sherford is a modern planned settlement in Devon, situated east of Plymouth and close to the boundary between South Hams and the Plymouth urban area. Unlike many settlements in the region, Sherford is a relatively recent development designed to accommodate substantial population growth while incorporating homes, schools, employment areas and public spaces. Its location places it within the attractive landscapes of the South Hams, with the countryside and coast of south Devon nearby. The settlement is continuing to develop and its character is therefore considerably more modern than that of the surrounding historic villages.

The historical and tourist importance of the area

Sherford itself is not yet a major historic or tourist destination, but its location provides convenient access to some of south Devon's most attractive places. Plymouth is nearby and offers the Royal William Yard, Barbican waterfront, National Marine Aquarium and extensive naval heritage. The South Devon coast, including Wembury and the beaches around Bigbury and the Erme estuary, provides excellent opportunities for walking and outdoor activities. Dartmoor National Park is also within reach for longer excursions, while the historic towns and villages of the South Hams offer a quieter alternative to the nearby city.

Food and when to visit

As a growing settlement, Sherford has a developing selection of local facilities, while nearby Plymouth and the South Hams provide a much wider choice of restaurants, cafés, pubs and farm shops. Devon is well known for cream teas, local seafood, cider and high-quality regional produce. Late spring through early autumn is particularly suitable for exploring the surrounding countryside and coast, although Plymouth's attractions make the area suitable throughout the year. Sherford is best considered a convenient modern base for exploring south Devon rather than a destination centred on historic attractions.
