Skegness is a major seaside resort on the Lincolnshire coast overlooking the North Sea. The town developed rapidly during the Victorian period when improved railway connections transformed it from a small fishing community into one of Britain's best-known holiday destinations. Its wide sandy beach, promenade, amusement attractions and traditional seaside architecture remain central to its identity. Today Skegness attracts visitors throughout the year, with summer being the busiest season for beach holidays and family entertainment. Spring and early autumn provide quieter conditions for coastal walks and sightseeing.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Skegness Beach and the long seafront are the town's principal attractions, offering traditional seaside entertainment and extensive views across the North Sea. The Skegness Pier extends into the sea and is one of the resort's best-known landmarks. Natureland Seal Sanctuary provides a popular family attraction, while Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve south of the town protects important coastal habitats and provides opportunities for birdwatching and walking. The Embassy Theatre and traditional amusement areas add to the town's classic seaside character.

Food and leisure

Skegness has a large selection of fish and chip shops, seafood restaurants, cafes, ice-cream parlours, traditional pubs and family restaurants. Local Lincolnshire produce is complemented by British seaside favourites and international cuisines. Visitors can combine meals and shopping with time on the beach, walks along the promenade, visits to the pier or excursions to Gibraltar Point.
