Southgate is a suburban district in the London Borough of Enfield, north London. The area developed from a small rural settlement into a prosperous suburb during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly following the arrival of the Piccadilly line. Southgate's town centre is notable for the architectural legacy of the 1930s, while surrounding residential streets retain a spacious and leafy character.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

Southgate's most recognisable landmark is Southgate Underground Station, designed by Charles Holden and completed in 1933, with its distinctive circular form and modernist detailing. Nearby Grovelands Park provides landscaped grounds, woodland, a lake and walking routes, while Arnos Park and Broomfield Park offer additional green spaces. Trent Country Park, with woodland, meadows and historic estate buildings, lies further north. The district also provides convenient access to the historic areas around Enfield and the wider Lea Valley.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Southgate has a varied selection of cafés, restaurants, pubs, bakeries and independent shops around the central area. British, Italian, Indian, Turkish, Greek and other international cuisines are represented. Late spring through early autumn is particularly pleasant for exploring Grovelands Park, Trent Country Park and the surrounding residential streets, while the architectural attractions and local restaurants make the area suitable throughout the year.
