Stepney is a historic district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The settlement has medieval origins and was once a large rural parish extending across much of the East End. Rapid urbanisation during the nineteenth century transformed Stepney as London expanded, while the nearby docks and industries attracted successive waves of migrants and workers. The district remains strongly associated with the multicultural history of London's East End.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

St Dunstan's Church, often known as the Church of the High Seas, is Stepney's most important historic landmark and has medieval origins. Nearby Stepney Green preserves attractive Georgian and Victorian buildings, while the Regent's Canal and Limehouse Basin provide waterside walking routes. The Museum of London Docklands in nearby Canary Wharf documents the history of the Thames and the port, while Whitechapel, Brick Lane and Spitalfields offer major cultural and architectural attractions within easy reach.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Stepney has a highly diverse food scene, with Bangladeshi, Indian, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, British and other international cuisines available throughout the district. Nearby Whitechapel and Brick Lane provide particularly extensive restaurants, markets, bakeries and specialist food shops. Late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the canals, parks and historic streets, although the district's cultural and culinary attractions make it lively throughout the year.
