Sumburgh Airport is located near Sumburgh on the southern tip of Mainland Shetland. It is the main air gateway to the Shetland Islands and plays an essential role in connecting the remote archipelago with mainland Scotland. The surrounding landscape is characterised by rugged cliffs, beaches, seabird colonies and open moorland shaped by the North Atlantic.

The historical and tourist importance of the area

The airport is close to several of Shetland's most important attractions. Sumburgh Head is a spectacular coastal viewpoint and nature reserve known for seabirds, seals and dramatic cliffs. Nearby Jarlshof contains an exceptional sequence of prehistoric and Norse archaeological remains, while the village of Scalloway has a rich maritime and political history. The wider Shetland Islands offer Viking heritage, traditional crofting landscapes, remote beaches and abundant marine wildlife. Lerwick, the main town, provides museums, historic streets and a busy harbour.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Lerwick and the island communities offer cafés, pubs, restaurants, bakeries and local shops, with seafood, lamb, traditional Scottish dishes and locally produced ingredients forming an important part of the cuisine. Summer is particularly popular because of the long daylight hours and excellent opportunities for exploring cliffs, archaeological sites and wildlife reserves. Spring and early autumn are also rewarding for birdwatching and coastal scenery, while winter provides a quieter atmosphere and opportunities to experience Shetland's distinctive seasonal culture.
