Swadlincote is the principal town of South Derbyshire, situated close to the borders with Leicestershire and Staffordshire. The town developed rapidly during the nineteenth century through coal mining and the pottery and brick-making industries, which took advantage of local clay and coal resources. Much of this industrial landscape has since been transformed, and Swadlincote now forms an important residential and commercial centre surrounded by the developing National Forest. The town's location makes it convenient for exploring Derbyshire, the National Forest and nearby historic destinations. Parks, woodland and former industrial sites provide opportunities for walking and cycling. Spring through autumn are particularly suitable for outdoor activities and exploring the surrounding countryside.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

The Sharpe's Pottery Museum is an important reminder of Swadlincote's industrial heritage and the town's long association with ceramics. The surrounding National Forest has transformed former mining and industrial landscapes into woodland and recreational areas. Nearby Conkers is a major family-oriented attraction within the National Forest, offering woodland trails and outdoor activities. The historic market town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and its castle are also within easy reach, while Calke Abbey provides an important historic estate and parkland landscape.

Food and leisure

Swadlincote has a broad range of cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries and local shops. Derbyshire produce, traditional British dishes and pub food feature in the regional cuisine, alongside international dining options. Visitors can combine shopping and dining in the town with walks through the National Forest or visits to nearby historic and family attractions.
