Twickenham is a historic town in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames on the River Thames. The settlement developed from a medieval riverside village and became increasingly fashionable during the eighteenth century, when wealthy residents built substantial houses along the river. Twickenham is now internationally recognised for its rugby heritage and remains one of southwest London's principal cultural and leisure destinations.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Twickenham Stadium is the town's defining attraction and the home of England rugby, hosting major international matches and sporting events. The riverside contains historic landmarks including Eel Pie Island and the elegant York House and Gardens. Strawberry Hill House, created by Horace Walpole, is an exceptional example of Gothic Revival architecture, while Marble Hill House and its park provide further eighteenth-century heritage. The Thames Path offers attractive walking routes along the river, and nearby Richmond Park provides extensive open countryside.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Twickenham has a lively collection of cafés, pubs, restaurants, bakeries and independent shops, with British, Italian, Indian, French, Mediterranean and other international cuisines. The riverside and central streets provide particularly attractive places for dining. Rugby fixtures make the town especially lively during the sporting season, while late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring the river, gardens and parks. Twickenham's combination of sport, architecture and riverside scenery makes it attractive throughout the year.
