St Davids, known in Welsh as Tyddewi, is a small cathedral city on the western tip of Pembrokeshire in South West Wales. It developed around the religious community founded by Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, in the sixth century. Although its population is very small, St Davids has held city status for centuries because of its cathedral and religious importance. Today it is primarily known as a cultural, historical and outdoor tourism destination within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

St Davids Cathedral is the city's defining landmark and has been an important pilgrimage destination since the medieval period. The ruins of the Bishop's Palace beside the cathedral provide an atmospheric insight into the area's religious history. The surrounding Pembrokeshire coast is the main natural attraction, with dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and opportunities for walking and wildlife watching. Boat trips to Ramsey Island are particularly popular for seeing seals, seabirds and other coastal wildlife.

Food and leisure

St Davids has a selection of cafés, restaurants, pubs and small independent businesses, many of which make use of Welsh produce and locally caught seafood. The compact centre is easy to explore on foot and has a distinctly rural coastal atmosphere. Late spring and summer are ideal for coastal walks, boat trips and beaches, while early autumn can offer quieter conditions and attractive scenery. St Davids is best visited as part of a wider Pembrokeshire itinerary rather than as a major urban stop.
