Wareham is a historic market town in Dorset, situated between the River Frome and River Piddle at the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck. The town has ancient origins and retains much of its medieval street pattern and defensive earthworks. Wareham's position between the rivers and close to Poole Harbour has made it an important settlement and trading centre for centuries. Today it provides an excellent base for exploring the Purbeck peninsula, the Jurassic Coast and nearby heathland and river landscapes. The town's historic centre, riverside setting and proximity to major natural attractions make it popular with walkers and visitors interested in history. Spring through autumn are ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside and coast.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Wareham's medieval town walls are among its most distinctive historic features, with substantial earthworks still surrounding parts of the town. St Martin's Church and the town's historic streets provide further evidence of its long development. Nearby Corfe Castle is one of Dorset's most famous landmarks, while the Isle of Purbeck offers access to Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and extensive sections of the Jurassic Coast. The River Frome and nearby Poole Harbour provide additional opportunities for walking, boating and wildlife observation.

Food and leisure

Wareham has cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, delis and independent shops, particularly around the historic town centre. Dorset seafood, local cheeses, meats and traditional British dishes are well represented. Visitors can combine dining in Wareham with a walk along the river, exploration of the town walls or excursions to Corfe Castle and the Jurassic Coast.
