Wdig, known in English as Goodwick, is a small coastal town in north Pembrokeshire adjoining Fishguard. The town grew substantially during the nineteenth century as its harbour and railway connections developed, eventually becoming an important ferry port for routes across the Irish Sea. Goodwick Harbour remains closely connected with the maritime history and transport network of the region. Today Wdig is primarily a residential and coastal community, but its harbour gives it significance well beyond its size.

The historical and tourist importance of the town

Goodwick Harbour is the principal feature of the town and provides views across Fishguard Bay, with ferries connecting the area to Ireland. The nearby Fishguard Fort and the Last Invasion Tapestry in Fishguard commemorate the French invasion of 1797. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes through the surrounding landscape, offering dramatic cliff-top walks and views of the Irish Sea. Nearby beaches, coastal villages and the Preseli Hills provide further opportunities for outdoor exploration.

Food and when to visit

Wdig and neighbouring Fishguard offer cafés, traditional pubs, restaurants, bakeries and small independent shops, with seafood and Welsh produce common on local menus. The harbour area is particularly convenient for travellers using the ferry or exploring the coast. Late spring through early autumn is the best period for coastal walks and sightseeing, although the maritime scenery is attractive throughout the year. Wdig is especially useful as a stop on journeys between Pembrokeshire, Fishguard and Ireland.
