Wells is a small cathedral city in Somerset and one of the most distinctive historic settlements in south-west England. The city grew around its cathedral and bishop's palace and has retained much of its medieval character. Despite its small population, Wells has held city status for centuries and remains an important cultural and religious centre. Its position beneath the Mendip Hills also places it close to some of Somerset's most attractive natural landscapes.

The historical and tourist significance of the city

Wells Cathedral is the city's defining landmark and is regarded as one of the finest examples of medieval Gothic architecture in England. The adjacent Bishop's Palace, with its moat, gardens and historic buildings, is another major attraction. Vicar's Close, one of the best-preserved medieval residential streets in Europe, provides an especially atmospheric walk through the historic centre. Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury Abbey and the Mendip Hills are all within easy reach, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to combine history with outdoor activities.

Food and leisure

Wells has traditional pubs, cafés, restaurants and independent shops around its market square and historic streets. Somerset is well known for cider, farmhouse cheeses and other regional produce, which can be found in local shops and restaurants. Spring and summer are particularly pleasant for exploring the cathedral gardens and surrounding countryside, while autumn is attractive for walking in the Mendip Hills. Wells is best visited as part of a wider Somerset itinerary that can include Bath, Glastonbury, Cheddar and the Mendip countryside.
