Wilton is a historic town in Wiltshire, situated just west of Salisbury at the confluence of the Rivers Wylye and Nadder. The settlement has ancient origins and was once the capital of the historic kingdom of Wessex. It later became renowned for carpet manufacturing and developed around the powerful Wilton Abbey and the Earls of Pembroke.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Wilton's principal attractions include Wilton House, an important English country house surrounded by an extensive historic park, and Wilton Cathedral, known for its medieval and later architectural features. The town also has a long association with the production of Wilton carpets, a craft tradition that became internationally recognised.

Wilton is close to Salisbury Cathedral, Old Sarum and the wider landscapes of the Cranborne Chase and Salisbury Plain. Its historic streets, river setting and proximity to major heritage attractions make it a useful base for exploring south Wiltshire.

Food and shopping

Wilton has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, independent shops and specialist businesses, while Salisbury provides a much wider range of shopping and dining. Wiltshire cheeses, meats, seasonal produce and traditional English foods feature in the regional cuisine. Spring through autumn is particularly pleasant for visiting Wilton House and exploring the surrounding countryside, while the town's historic attractions provide year-round interest.
