Wimbledon is a historic district in the London Borough of Merton, southwest London. The settlement developed from a medieval village around Wimbledon Hill and Wimbledon Common before becoming a fashionable suburban area during the nineteenth century. Its international reputation grew through the development of the Wimbledon Championships, while the historic village, common and surrounding architecture continue to define its character.

The historical and tourist importance of the district

The All England Lawn Tennis Club hosts the Wimbledon Championships, one of the world's most prestigious tennis tournaments, and is the district's defining attraction. Wimbledon Common provides extensive heathland, woodland and walking routes, while Wimbledon Village contains historic buildings, boutiques and restaurants. The Wimbledon Windmill Museum recalls the area's rural past, and Cannizaro Park offers landscaped gardens, woodland and a historic mansion. The nearby New Wimbledon Theatre is an important performing arts venue.

Food, shopping and when to visit

Wimbledon has an extensive selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs, bakeries and independent shops, particularly around Wimbledon Village and the town centre. British, Italian, Indian, French, Mediterranean and other international cuisines are well represented. The district becomes especially busy during the Wimbledon Championships, usually held in early summer. Late spring through early autumn is also ideal for exploring Wimbledon Common, Cannizaro Park and the village, while the theatres, museums and restaurants provide year-round attractions.
