Woodstock is a historic market town in Oxfordshire, situated on the edge of the Cotswolds northwest of Oxford. The town developed as a royal hunting centre and later became closely associated with the nearby Blenheim Palace. Its streets contain many attractive eighteenth-century stone buildings.

The historical and tourist significance of the town

Blenheim Palace is the town's principal attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its Baroque architecture, landscaped parkland and connections with the Dukes of Marlborough and Sir Winston Churchill. The town itself contains historic buildings, museums and traditional streets reflecting its long royal and commercial history.

The surrounding Cotswold countryside offers opportunities for walking and cycling, while nearby attractions include Bladon, the birthplace and burial place of Winston Churchill, and numerous villages along the Evenlode Valley. Oxford is also within convenient reach.

Food and shopping

Woodstock has cafés, restaurants, traditional pubs, bakeries, delicatessens, galleries, antique shops and independent retailers. Oxfordshire and Cotswold produce, including local cheeses, meats, seasonal vegetables and regional ales, features in the local food culture. Spring through autumn is particularly suitable for exploring Blenheim's gardens and the surrounding countryside, while the historic town centre remains attractive throughout the year.
